The Little House of Pittsford, NY

I spotted this house on a recent drive.  I decided to try and get a closer look and luckily it turned-out to be a museum that's open to the public (only six hours per week, but I timed it right).  They call it "The Little House."

View from the street.

I am a little hazy on the details, but it was built in 1819 across the street.  Later, it was restored and moved to its present location where it sits on a modern foundation with a full basement.  I estimate its dimensions to be about 18 feet wide by 26 feet long, or about 468 square feet the way I calculate it.

Photo taken in the back room looking toward the front of the house.  Door to left of fireplace is to a closet.
The ceilings are ten feet high.  It has a covered porch that runs across the full width, and seems to be about five feet deep.  The house has front and back doors, two windows in the front, Two windows on one side, and one window on each of the other sides.  It also has a central chimney with a fireplace that faces the back room.

Back and side of house.
It's unclear (to me at least) whether it was originally a house and later turned into a lawyer's office, or if it was a lawyer's office all along.  Either way, the place is dripping with good old-fashioned charm.  It is essentially two rooms, a closet, and a partitioned space that houses the basement stairs.  The basement has a modern bathroom.

Looking at these pictures makes me feel like drawing-up some floor plans to show how you could take this general size and layout and turn it into a comfortable home.

  1. You're right, you can copy the looks and design of this little house and make your own dream house. I like the front view with a door facing a stair.
